Please provide comments and questions related to Lecture 1. Indicate completion of listening assignment. The power point with audio was posted 26-Aug-13. The homework on the final page can be returned by e-mail or submitted during the next class meeting on Tuesday 3-September-13.
I completed the assignment and now understand how to effectively read the chart of the nuclides.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone else unable to hear the audio stream on the lecture "with audio"? My speakers are working fine but I can't hear the audio on the lecture.
ReplyDeleteIf you open in power point try enabling the editing. I can open this and hear it on my computer. I will convert the file to a microsoft media video and upload that.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I tried opening the lecture on a different computer and it worked. I'll try your suggestion on the next lecture.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the issue. I am glad to see it works.

ReplyDeleteOn slide 15, you talk about synthesizing Np using neutrons created in a cyclotron. What process is used to create/free the uncharged neutrons? Is a charged particle accelerated in the cyclotron which then interacts with another particle to free neutrons? I'm missing a piece of the puzzle because it seems difficult to directly accelerate an uncharged particle using electromagnetic fields.
ReplyDeleteThe neutron are produced in nuclear reactions. In an accelerator the charge particle can be accelerated. As this particle interacts with target or other nuclei, neutrons can be liberated from the reaction. This fact is used to create a neutron source from an alpha emitting isotope and Be, usually Pu is used. The Pu-Be sources produce neutrons from the reaction of the alpha particle with the Be.
ReplyDeleteWe will learn more about this in the lecture on nuclear reactions.
The homework help me understand how the Chart of the Nuclides works as well as navigate it. I can easily find the necessary information about a radioactive element.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments on homework and response.
ReplyDeleteThe lecture along with the homework helped provide a better understand of the Chart of the Nuclides.
ReplyDeletethanks for the comment!
ReplyDeleteThis lecture was very useful in helping me interpret the chart of the nuclides
ReplyDeleteAll done with that lecture. I can look up isotopes at will now with the chart of nuclides. See you tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThis lecture certainly has clarified the chart of the nuclides. Also, it has shown me the the history behind Radiochemistry and its discoveries.
ReplyDeleteI've listened to the lecture and read the chart of nuclides.
