Fall 2014: CHEM 312 Lecture 7 Fission

A general overview of nuclear fission is presented. The probability of fission is described based on developed models including the liquid drop model and shell corrections. Discussion on spontaneous fission and fissioning isomers is given. The transition nucleus and fission product distributions are discussed. The total kinetic energy, mass distribution, and charge distribution during fission are presented. Changes in fission product distribution with parent properties are introduced. Delayed neutrons from fission and their role in reactors are given. Proton induced fission is introduced.

  6. This was a great lecture. I enjoyed the section on delayed neutron chains and controlling fission reactions by keeping the available neutron source constant with neutron poisons and other control elements.

  9. I did the quiz and totally forgot to respond to this afterwards. I really enjoyed this lecture and it further expanded and built upon my understanding of nuclear reactions through fission. This lecture also helped me differentiate the difference between fusion and fission.

  12. I am glad I can finally connect the dots from the physics lectures to chemistry. This lecture helped in understanding how much energy is required for the fission to occur. It was also interesting to see how the nucleus shape changes upon fission.
