Spring 2016: CHEM 312 Lecture 11 Speciation

This lecture covers fundamentals of chemical kinetics and thermodynamics, mainly as a review. Thermodynamic laws, electrochemical reactions, and acid-base reactions are covered. The thermodynamic discussion relates to Gibbs free energy and equilibrium constants. Kinetic discussion related to its use in data analysis Emphasis of the lectures is applied to information useful for speciation modeling.  Calculations and models for speciation are discussed. Equilibrium modeling using EXCEL and the program CHESS are presented

  1. Finished the lecture and quiz. The excel and chess programs provide a lot of information, but the rest of the lecture was a good review of thermodynamic equations and constants.

    1. I am happy to hear about the review. I always like to build upon previous knowledge.

  2. Just finished the quiz and lecture! Jchess seems like a really cool program and extremely useful. I also found the slide on the limitations of K_sp a really good addition. The limitations of equations are so often skipped over (although they really do matter)

  5. I have completed and submitted the quiz. Seeing the old material from gen chem being applied to these nuclear materials is nice after focusing on their physical properties.

  6. I think this has been the easiest one so far. I just remember a lot of this from Quantitative Analysis. And all of the questions on the PDF Quiz were literally in the video.

    1. Thanks. This is really the first full chemistry lecture in the course, so the material is familiar and comfortable.

  8. I finished the quiz and lecture on Monday I think. Sorry for the delay in commenting! This quiz was good. Probably because I'm a Chem major. It was good review too. Thank you!

  9. I finished the lecture and quiz when it was due sorry for late responses again, I had a chance to play around with the excel files and tried them for different reactions, it was interesting
